It was a record year for the Festival of Marketing, with more than 4000 delegates at London’s Tobacco Dock for the largest global event dedicated to brand marketers. With ticket sales and Masters of Marketing awards entries each rising more than 25% year on year,

Tesco, John Lewis, Channel 4, Lego, Santander, TSB, ITV, Virgin Atlantic, Unilever, M&S, Nestlé, CNBC, Diageo, Jaguar Land Rover, LEGO, Post Office, Microsoft and IBM Watson were just a few of the many modern marketers sharing their insights and experiences on how to accelerate performance through marketing excellence in a world of digital transformation.

A Festival highlight saw the launch of a ground-breaking initiative from Econsultancy promising to redefine the marketing business: the Modern Marketing Model (M3). A rethink of traditional marketing models such as the 4Ps, the model is intended to help modern marketers evaluate the structures of their marketing departments as traditional marketing and digital teams begin to integrate.

Festival speakers included actor and author Stephen Fry, who took to the main stage to warn marketers that automation and artificial intelligence were about to change the world, warning businesses were not prepared for this new era.

“If we sleepwalk into AI we’re in great danger. And it’s not just AI, it’s the confluence of the internet of things, genomics and gene editing,” he said.

Fry also called for the regulation of social media platforms arguing that digital platforms should now be treated as publishers, adding: “They’re [Facebook] not treated in law in the same way that press is… which is absurd because most people now get their news from Facebook but they’re not subject to the same requirements.”

Serial entrepreneur Jo Malone gave a masterclass in building brands and business with creativity and passion, while Olympic diver Tom Daley shared a sofa with TV presenter and pop star Rochelle Humes and TV star Reggie Yates to discuss influencer marketing. Meanwhile, blogger Deliciously Ella explained how influencers could build businesses through powerful customer relationships.

The Festival of Marketing will return on 3-4 October 2018.
